Expedition Organizers

The International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (IARC), along with Russia’s Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), has organized this expedition. The accompanying summer school taking place onboard has also been organized by IARC as well as the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS in Russia. Throughout this expedition (and others), scientists will continue long term projects such as the Nansen and Amundsen Basin Observational System to help monitor conditions in the Arctic.Click on the icons below to learn more.

Support for the expedition and the summer school has been provided by organizations listed below.

    1. Dear Joann, there are differences and similarities between the two. The main properties of water that we study are salinity, temperature, depth, current, and other details of it’s chemical composition (like oxygen or nitrates). The Mediterranean and the Arctic differ (near the surface, the first is warmer/saltier, the second is colder/fresher). So the density is probably similar there (since saltwater is denser than fresh water, and cold water is denser than warm water).

    1. Hi Joann, we have not seen any underwater waterfalls, as that is not a part of our observational or research goals. But something called cascades do happen, which occur when you have cold and warm layers at different layers, and the colder denser water cascades downward. Sounds like a really cool thing, underwater cascades!
