The route first takes us near the archipelago of Svalbard, about halfway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole. Over the last couple centuries, it has been a whaling base then a coal mining territory, and now, research has become a key industry in this place without roads. If you want to get somewhere, snowmobiles, aircraft, and boats are how you get there. Located between 74 and 81 degrees north latitude, Svalbard has an Arctic climate, with 60% covered by glaciers. This fragile environment, which experiences “midnight sun” and “polar night” over the course of the yearly seasons, is home to polar bears, reindeer, and seabird breeding grounds.
What kind of research is being conducted here?
How have the glaciers and sea ice changed in recent years?
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
